Case Study: Helping June Sit Out Again After 3 Months in Bed

Background

June is an 89-year-old woman living in a residential care home in Pontefract, Yorkshire. June was Frail and with multiple health conditions, she had been confined to bed for over three months, as care staff were unsure if it was safe to assist her in sitting out. Concerns about manual handling risks and a lack of appropriate equipment meant June remained in bed day and night, affecting not only her physical wellbeing but also her mood and quality of life.

The Problem

Prolonged bed rest was taking a toll. June was becoming increasingly deconditioned, at higher risk of pressure sores, and socially isolated from the other residents. Her family were desperate to see her regain even a small amount of independence and dignity—but the care home lacked the confidence and clinical input to trial any changes.

How OT4Life Helped

We were contacted to provide a specialist moving and handling assessment. Our Occupational Therapist visited June in the Pontefract-based care home, carried out a full assessment of her physical condition, postural needs, and skin integrity, and reviewed the manual handling skills and equipment available to the staff.

We then:

●     Recommended a safe transfer method using a specific hoisting technique

●     Identified the right seating equipment, ensuring adequate postural support and pressure relief

●     Trained care staff on how to safely carry out the transfers

●     Provided written guidance and a risk-managed care plan to support regular sitting out

The Outcome

For the first time in over three months, June was able to be safely hoisted into a supportive chair and sit in the lounge with other residents. Her posture was carefully supported, and she remained comfortable and engaged throughout the trial.

The moment was incredibly emotional for June and her family. Being able to see her sitting up and smiling again was described as a “turning point.”

In Her Family’s Words

“Mum looked like herself again. We hadn’t seen her out of bed for so long, and we were beginning to lose hope.It was lovely dealing with someone friendly, understanding and knowledgeable, who obviously loves doing their job. Thanks again OT4life.”
